Therefore, it seems a bizarre decision to list him as a potential punter, but Mahomes is clearly their best option with Tommy Townsend hurt. Townsend suffered a hyperextended knee injury in Week 6 against the Denver Broncos, and clips were shared this week of Mahomes punting the ball in practice. Chiefs assistant coach Dave Toub officially named Mahomes as their backup, and the quarterback reacted on social media. Patience is key!” Regardless of Mahomes’ ability, the Chiefs aren’t a team that uses their punter often due to the strength of their offense. However, when they host the Los Angeles Chargers in Week 7 there is a possibility that Mahomes could fail to convert on third down but then remain on the field to punt the football. The Chiefs have only punted the ball 18 times this season, while the New Orleans Saints lead the league with 35 punts. The Chiefs are 5-1 heading into Week 7, with their only loss of the season coming on the opening day when they were beaten at home against the Detroit Lions. They have had some close games this season, but the Super Bowl champions continue to prove why they’re No. 1.
